Born in Yakoyo near Ile-Ife, Osun State,he attended Offa Grammar School, Royal Nigeria Military Forces Training College and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. He served as an officer in the famed 3rd Marine Commando during the Civil War and later as a member of the Supreme Military Council. He rose to become Chief of Army and later Chief of Defence Staff, retiring in 1980. He served briefly as a Minister during the Babangida years. Akinrinade was a prominent member of the Pro-democracy group NADECO- fierce opponents of the Abacha regime.He holds the title of 'Jagunmolu of Ile-Ife'.
